Title: Full-Time Staff Perfusionist – Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester, MA

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Pay: $205,000.00 – $215,000.00 per year

Description:
Saint Vincent Hospital – Roughly 200 Open-Heart cases per year, 1-2 Cardiac Surgeons, case mix is mostly CABGs and Valves.

Setting(s):
Hospitals: Surgical Services; Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory; Intensive Care or Cardiovascular Intensive Care Units, or any other area of the hospital requiring emergent bypass intervention

Supervision:
Direct supervision by the physician performing the specific procedure and the Manager of Perfusion services at the clinical site;
Indirect supervision by the Regional Perfusion Manager & Executive Leadership.

Definition of Care or Service:
Performs those functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of a patient.
Scope of Service may include:
Performs and or manages the following safely and efficiently:
Extracorporeal Circulation/ Cardiopulmonary Support
Counter-pulsation
Circulatory support/ventricular assistance
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
Blood conservation techniques/auto-transfusion
Anti-coagulation and hematologic monitoring/analysis
Physiological monitoring/analysis
Blood gas and blood chemistry monitoring/analysis
Induction of hypothermia/hyperthermia with reversal
Hemodilution
Hemofiltration
Permission to accept verbal orders
Administration of medications, blood components, and anesthetic agents via the extracorporeal circuit
Documentation of inpatient medical record associated with described duties
Maintenance of equipment logs
Specific treatment modalities:
Participation in delivery of platelet gel
Participation in conducting research studies
Patient resuscitation in coordination with the Cardiovascular team
Coordination of care with other disciplines
Maintains and secures patient data and records
Documents the procedure in the medical record
Demonstrates Clinical and Service excellence behaviors to include code of Keystone Perfusion’s conduct core fundamentals in daily interactions with patients, families, co-workers, and physicians

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Graduate of an accredited cardiovascular perfusion education program
  • Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP)
  • Massachusetts State Perfusion License
  • American Heart Association or Red Cross health care provider BLS Certification

The Certified Cardiovascular Perfusionist will demonstrate:
The safe and effective operation of cardiac perfusion equipment
Maintains equipment in good working order
Informs Biomed of maintenance that needs to be performed on equipment
Demonstrates effective infection control practices related to equipment operation
Accurate patient information review
Uses at least two ways to identify patients before treating or performing a procedure
Verifies that the requested procedure correlates with the patient’s clinical history, presentation, and physician order
Participates in the pre-procedure process to verify the correct procedure, for the correct patient, at the correct site and involves the patient in the verification process when possible
Participates in a time-out immediately before the start of an invasive procedure or making of the incision.
Accesses the patient medical record appropriately
Documents in the medical record according to the facility standard/policy
Maintains a safe environment
Labels containers used for blood and specimens in the presence of the patient
Labels all medications and solutions on and off the sterile field in perioperative and procedural settings
Infection Prevention
Practices consistent hand hygiene
Uses personal protective equipment (PPE) when required
Required immunizations per Division requirements
Complies with Isolation precautions
Maintains sterile field
Professional Development:
Participates in the required educational programs.
Participates in monthly departmental meetings.
Maintains current certification and licensure (if applicable) requirements for Perfusion practice.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to interact with patients, families, departmental units, medical and nursing staff, or all essential matters.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in an area of specialty.
  • Ability to perform clinically as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist in the facility setting on a regular basis.
  • Ability to operate, use, and interpret data from a wide variety of equipment to perform perfusion care as well as necessary perioperative or operating room care to support the safety and wellbeing of the patient while they are under the care of the Perfusionist.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are required to effectively collaborate with various clinical staff and other disciplines.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served.

Other Responsibilities:
Responsible for ordering, stocking, maintaining, organizing, and inventory of perfusion supplies. Other duties as assigned.
